Google Merchant Center Performance Explained: Clicks, Impressions, CTR and Conversions
Merchant Center’s performance reports show how your products do across Google: in Shopping ads and in free listings. Here is what each number means and how to act on it.
The key metrics
- Impressions: how often your products were shown on Google.
- Clicks: how often shoppers clicked through to your product page.
- CTR (click-through rate): clicks divided by impressions. It tells you how attractive the offer looks next to competitors.
- Conversions: purchases attributed to those clicks, when conversion tracking is set up.
- Conversion value (revenue): the total value of those purchases.
Reading the numbers
- High impressions, low CTR: improve the title (lead with the product type and key attribute), the main image and the price competitiveness.
- Low impressions: check for disapprovals and warnings, missing GTINs, thin titles and missing product categories.
- Good CTR, few conversions: look at the landing page, shipping costs and stock.
- A sudden drop: often a wave of new disapprovals or an account issue. Check the Issues list first.
Compare the right periods
Compare 7, 28 or 90 days against the previous period of the same length, and against the same season last year if your sales are seasonal. Look at your top products: a handful usually drive most clicks and revenue, and keeping those approved matters most.
Track performance from your phone
Merchant Center for Google shows clicks, impressions, CTR, conversions and revenue for the last 7, 28 or 90 days, with the change against the previous period, daily charts and your top products.
Frequently asked questions
Do performance reports include free listings?
Yes. Merchant Center reports cover both Shopping ads and free listings, and you can filter by marketing method.
Why are conversions zero in Merchant Center?
Conversions need conversion tracking, for example through Google Ads or Google Analytics linked to Merchant Center. Without it only clicks and impressions are reported.
What is a good CTR for Google Shopping?
It varies by category and price point, so compare against your own past periods and your top products rather than a universal benchmark.
